Tree trimming ideas to show some live oak love

TREE-TRIMMING REPORT

On Tuesday, October 31, 2017, I supplied a list compiled by Andy Broyles of problem streets with low-hanging limbs throughout Ocean Park to the City’s arborist, Susan French. The following Tuesday, she reported back to me that she had sent her assistant, Brian Crouch, out to review the locations. He told her that over half of the affected trees were located on private property (defined as having at least 50% of the trunk within the survey lines of the homeowner’s property.) She said that she would try to get as many as possible of the trees that were on public property pruned this fall and winter, but that funding might not permit all of them to be dressed. The City does not perform this work; it is contracted out.

She stated that homeowners could trim (or contract to have trimmed) any tree on their own property without a permit and that there was no need to check with the City arborist before doing so. She further stated that her office has pruning guidelines available to interested homeowners and contractors.

If Ocean Park residents are interested in clearing these streets, it seems that homeowners can either arrange for it individually or band together to contract a number of trimmings at one time and perhaps have it done more economically. Is there an interest in organizing a tree-trimming schedule for affected streets?

I would be happy to help coordinate such a schedule. Now is the best time to prune trees, during their dormant season. Comments welcome. grace@sdcc.info

Anyone notice the oyster shell in the pics?

It was a few feet underground where the holes were dug at Lesner sign.
Lesner Bridge construction has also turned up a number of oyster shells and whole oysters during their work.

Updates from the Prez about what the Civic League has been up to.

Although no meetings are scheduled this summer, the OPCL is still actively working to better the community. The Bayfront Advisory Commission’s Outreach meeting created another opportunity to list Ocean Parks’s vital needs and changes needed from City services and City budgets.

Every one of these issues is a compilation of resident input as well as challenging the ever changing budget programs that leave Ocean Park with substandard infrastructure. See the current list we presented here.

Shore Drive Phase IV will fix this old, unsafe infrastructure.

In the meantime the Ocean Park median signs are under construction and will be completed before July.  These signs are a coastal-classic inspiration and were in the city approval process since last December and required a City Council decision.  They will  be installed on Shore Drive, one will be placed at Marlin Bay and one near Lesner Bridge.

A special committee  named the North Pleasure House Creek Committee is active and has been funded to assist the residents in the Pelican Dunes area who could be adversely affected by development and filling of wetlands west of the 7/11. All property owners in this corridor are urged to donate matching funds and deal with this issue as a group ASAP.

Wouldn’t it make sense COVB purchase this for open space & storm water facility?

Remember, starting tomorrow Monday June 19th, including Tuesday & Wednesday, the Lesner Bridge will be closed from midnight until 4am.   You’ll have to go around if you get caught on “the other side”.

If you’re on the other side, you’ll have to go around.

 Until next time.

Lesner Bridge will be closing for a few hours overnight in June

Check out all the info at SDCC.info:

LES BRDG CLOSED 12AM-4AM
JUNE 19 THRU JUNE 24

We have reached that point in the construction schedule where we need the gantry crane that is currently stored on the north side of Shore Drive to be put in place so that the superstructure of the new eastbound Lesner Bridge can be assembled.

To do this, we need to temporarily close Shore Drive to slide the gantry over the roadway and into position on the south side of Shore Drive.

This move will be conducted over three nights: June 19th, 20th, and 21st.

We will need short-term closures of Shore Drive between the hours of 12 midnight and 4 am, so as to disrupt as little traffic as possible. Note: One lane of the bridge will be kept open for use by emergency vehicles. In the event that emergency vehicles need to cross the bridge during this time, work will be temporarily halted to let the emergency vehicles cross the bridge. The detour route for all other vehicles during these dates and times is provided below.

Thanks to City Council for approving our new signs that’ll be installed in the median!

We also thank everyone who helped make this happen like the Bayfront Advisory Committee, and with COVB Barry Frankenfield, Kay Wilson & Mark Shea.

East one located near Lesner Bridge at Dupont Circle.
West one located at Marlin Bay & Shady Oaks.
